Borrowing in the United States: research, comparison and consumer guidance

This section covers consumer credit as it works in the U.S. market: federal disclosure rules that require an APR before you commit, state-level licensing and rate caps, and the credit reporting system that shapes the terms you are offered. Our Canadian section is written separately because the rules and providers differ.

What shapes U.S. consumer credit

Federal disclosure

Consumer lenders must disclose an APR and the cost of credit before you are bound, which makes APR the most reliable basis for comparing offers of the same term.

State regulation

States license lenders and set their own caps on rates and fees. A product available in one state may be priced differently, or unavailable, in another.

Credit reporting

The nationwide credit bureaus hold the files lenders assess. You can access yours free and dispute errors before applying.

Common questions about U.S. borrowing

Does MoneyLoanHub lend money in the United States?
No. We are an independent research and comparison platform. We do not lend, underwrite or decide applications, and we may be compensated when we refer you to a third-party provider.
Why do you not publish example interest rates?
Consumer credit pricing depends on the individual applicant and on state law, and it changes frequently. Publishing illustrative numbers would be misleading, so we publish provider figures only once they are confirmed.
Does state law affect what I can borrow?
Yes. States license lenders and regulate rate caps, fees and certain product types differently, so the same product can be priced or structured differently depending on where you live.
How do I check my credit before applying?
You are entitled to free credit reports from the nationwide credit bureaus. Reviewing them and disputing errors before applying is free and can affect the terms you are offered.
